Beyond Cape Town
Cape Town is best explored by car. This way you can travel from the mountains to the coast and the city’s cosmopolitan heart completely at your leisure. Accelerate beyond the city limits and you’ll be greeted with incredible sights that create an unforgettable holiday.
Stellenbosch
Heaven for wine aficionados, Stellenbosch is nestled in the Cape Vineyards region, around 45 minutes away in your rental car. In addition to producing some of the best wine in the world, this town is extremely picturesque with tree-lined streets and distinctive Dutch architecture.
With verdant vineyards as far as the eye can see, road trips don't get any more scenic. To discover the area’s rich history, visit the Village Museum. If you're seeking wildlife, be sure to stop in at Eagle Encounters, just outside of Stellenbosch, where you can get up close to a number of different birds of prey.
Hermanus
If you're interested in whale watching, Hermanus is the place to go. This scenic destination offers visitors the best land-based whale watching location in the world. It’s actually where the mighty southern right whales migrate from Antarctica in their droves every June to give birth.
Hermanus is also a popular place to spot sharks in the wild. Boat trips take thrill-seeking visitors to the nearby Shark Alley, where a number of cage tours operate. Besides the whale and shark watching opportunities, you can also visit museums here, like the Whale House and Photographic museums, or participate in adventure activities like paragliding, scuba diving and kayaking. All this is reachable in just an hour and a half along the N2 from Cape Town.
With an Avis rental car, you’re free to enjoy Cape Town and its surroundings at your leisure.
Plan your journey from Cape Town
Cape Town and its surroundings lend perfectly to scenic road trips. This city has a diverse selection of landscapes that are easily reached by car. Your first stop should be at Table Mountain National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you can take the cable car up to the top of the mountain to enjoy spectacular views.
The Cape Peninsula, with its beautiful beaches, is also part of the national park. It’s also where the Cape of Good Hope is located – a rocky headland on the southern tip of the mainland that’s not only historically important, but also a haven for wildlife.
Picturesquely situated at the foot of Table Mountain is the V&A Waterfront. This harbour setting is brimming with numerous restaurants, shops and family-friendly attractions. Popular activities here include taking a historic boat tour around the harbour, visiting the Springbok Experience Rugby Museum, encountering penguins at the Two Oceans Aquarium, delving into artisan food at the Market on the Wharf and watching a movie alfresco-style at the Galileo Open Air Cinema.
With the convenience of a hire car, you’re free to discover Cape Town’s diverse neighbourhoods, such as the Bo-Kaap Muslim quarter with its mosques and pretty streets lined with colourful buildings. The fascinating Bo-Kaap Museum provides a fascinating insight into the culture of the local people, largely the descendants of 18th century slaves from southeast Asia.
There’s no limit to how you spend your time in Cape Town with the freedom to drive.
