Plan your journey from King Shaka International Airport

Durban is serviced by the King Shaka International Airport, which lies around 40km north of Durban itself. With a rental car, the city centre is easily reached in just over 30 minutes on the N2.

Although Durban is a big city, it’s easy to escape the hustle and bustle simply by driving to the beach. Bay of Plenty and Dairy beach are the ideal sandy stretches for adventurous types who want to ride the impressive waves. Families might be more suited to the relaxed Addington beach, where it’s perfectly safe for children to swim.

The Campbell Collections is the ultimate place to learn about South Africa in years gone by. This museum holds an impressive collection of documents and artefacts that relate to Zulu and Natal culture. For a museum with a difference, visit the Natal Sharks Board, an institute dedicated to studying sharks that gives fascinating audio-visual presentations.

Before you leave Durban, be sure to book a table at Mundo Vida, a coastal restaurant that serves up classic dishes with a contemporary twist. Order the seafood medley and you’ll be able to try a selection of fresh seafood from Durban’s coast.

There’s no limit to how you spend your time in Durban with the freedom to drive.

Beyond King Shaka International Airport

From King Shaka International Airport, the convenience of a hire car makes it easy to explore far beyond the city of Durban, and to discover other treasures of South Africa’s east coast.

Ballito

The charming beach town of Ballito is just a 20-minute drive from the airport. This is a place for simple, relaxed beach days, and thanks to the climate in this region, you can sun yourself on the golden sand 365 days a year. Here you can also take boat rides out to see the bottlenose dolphins that swim through the area.

Valley of 1000 Hills

Drive 45 minutes south of the airport and you’ll arrive in Hillcrest, the village at the centre of the Valley of 1000 Hills. This is an area of astounding natural beauty with no less than ten nature reserves – the perfect place to get in touch with the great outdoors. The valley is filled with many longstanding Zulu settlements, providing a glimpse into a part of traditional South African culture.

With a hire car from King Shaka International Airport, you can tour the South African coastline in total comfort.
